Do I need a lawyer?

Sarah Süffig:

When do I need a lawyer?

Answer:

You need a lawyer in any case if:

  • The other party has a lawyer

If the other side spends money on a specialist, it wants to settle the matter in its favor. Accordingly, you should ensure a “level playing field” and also mandate a lawyer.

  • There is a lot at stake.

If there is a relevant threat of punishment or a high amount in dispute, it is worth consulting a lawyer. With a lawyer, you will often have to pay a few CHF 1000 in advance. The amount in dispute should therefore also be at least in this range.

  • You are concerned with the principle.

If you do not want to tolerate certain behavior on the part of authorities or private individuals, then it is worth getting a lawyer involved if you have the money to do so. Lawyers are expensive, so enforcing your principles is usually expensive too.
