Unprovoked traffic control

In contrast to a check under the Code of Criminal Procedure, the police may carry out traffic checks for no reason (regardless of suspicion).

Vito and the unprovoked traffic stop

Vito Volvo:

Yesterday I was traveling by car and was checked by the police just like that. When I asked the policeman why he had stopped me, he just said it was none of my business. Can the police do that?

Answer:

Hello Vito

Yes, that is basically permissible – even if you would expect a police officer to have more sensitivity for the right tone.

In contrast to a police check under the Code of Criminal Procedure, the police may carry out traffic checks regardless of suspicion. For example, random or systematic checks and even large-scale checks can be carried out in accordance with the Road Traffic Control Ordinance. In addition, the police may check IDs and permits on public roads at any time.
