Riding an e-scooter on the road

You have to ride an e-scooter on the road - just like a bicycle.

Riding an e-scooter on the road?

What you should know about using e-bikes, e-scooters and the like in road traffic.

Karl Konrad Koriander:

For some time now, there have been e-scooters all over the city, which you can rent very easily with your smartphone. Do I have to ride such an e-scooter on the road or on the sidewalk?

Answer:

Hello Karl Konrad

According to the Ordinance on the Technical Requirements for Road Vehicles (VTS), e-scooters fall into the category of light motorcycles.

When using them, the same rules apply as for bicycles in accordance with the Traffic Regulation Ordinance (VRV).

So you have to ride the e-scooter on the road. Riding is also permitted in pedestrian zones where cycling at walking pace is permitted.

However, it is a punishable offense to use the sidewalk on an e-scooter.
